The Star of Durham’s Eye

In today’s editorial commentary on the GTTA’s list of “quick wins”, The Toronto Star added in a bit of commentary of particular interest to Durham residents:
Notably absent in these recommendations is any additional service to Durham Region. If the GTTA is to succeed, it cannot be seen to be ignoring some areas. Durham is booming [...]

Scarborough RT Extension

The TTC has begun the environmental assessment process for an extension of the Scarborough RT to Sheppard and Markham Road. This is an amendment to an existing EA done in 1992. In addition, Toronto is undertaking a further EA to consider running it to the Malvern Town Centre area, presumably at Neilson Road.
The extension [...]

GTTA Quick Starts and Durham

At yesterday’s meeting, the Greater Toronto Transportation Authority approved the following “Quick Start” projects.  These are items that can be put in play relatively early while the GTTA works on the larger transportation plan.  As such, these items will necessarily be small-scale projects that do not involve significant design, environmental assessments, or large costs.

Another September service change

DRT has added another small service change to the September schedule. As of September 4, Whitby route 301 West Lynde/Otter Creek will be extended to Taunton.

YRT versus DRT, Redux

A few days ago, I posted a detailed comparison between York Region Transit and Durham Region Transit, with an idea of comparing the progress of DRT with YRT. There is a lot of value in such a comparison, since both serve similar suburban areas with similar needs, and both are relatively new regional systems [...]

YRT versus DRT

First, I want to admit that I’m not posting as much as I would like to. The twins are taking up a lot of time now that they’ve become actual little people. On top of it, well, I’m feeling a bit frustrated about DRT. It’s hard to want to write when it seems [...]

DRT Service Changes

DRT has posted some service changes for September, particularly affecting those living in Brock, Scugog, and Uxbridge.

950 Uxbridge/Port Perry/UOIT: a new route running from Uxbridge and Port Perry to UOIT and northern Oshawa. Only one bus every two hours, so if you are going to take this it will be critical to know the [...]

To Sit or Not To Sit

I try hard not to focus this blog exclusively on my own personal experiences, which only represent a small subset of transit service in Durham Region. To do so would require that I ignore many important issues that don’t directly impact me.
But yet, there are times when my own experiences are a good indication [...]

Durham and the GTTA

I’ve been a bit remiss in posting lately, since life and the twins have kept me pretty busy. One big event last week was a regular meeting of the new Greater Toronto Transportation Authority, in which Toronto and the surrounding regions presented on their transportation plans and, in particular, their ideas of what should [...]

Holiday Sunday, Statutory Holiday, or Sunday?

As I’m sure everyone is aware, Monday is Civic Holiday and so it’s to be expected that our transit systems will be providing holiday service.
But exactly what service will be provided? A quick trip to the DRT site reveals the following:

DRT WEST – Ajax/Pickering – Holiday Sunday Service, No Flag Bus Service
DRT CENTRE – [...]
